Stern's guest appearance on Late Night with David Letterman on June 19, 1984, launched Stern into the national spotlight and gave his radio show unprecedented exposure. In Detroit, Howard migrated to FM radio station in Detroit ( (putting in a year at DC101 and making it the #1 station in town in the process), and returned to New York in 1982 to work at NBC's flagship AM radio station WNBC-AM. After Dresner held-off on giving Stern a $25 raise, Stern decided to head-off to a Detroit rock station for more money.
